- Tomatoes : You can grow them in pots or your backyard garden, whichever variety you like , whether it is cherry tomatoes or the big ones , method is same. Sow the seeds in September before the winter and your seedlings will be ready before the winter arrives. Dig them a little deep in the soil and place some kind of support around it to let the vine grow strong & water daily.
- Garlic: Separate some garlic cloves and pit in the ground pointed side facing upwards and you will see green shoots coming out from it and these can be used for a delicious breakfast with eggs and minced meat.
- Spring onions: Just dig some onions and enjoy fresh green spring onions which can also be used with the garlic sprouts and in salads.
- Lemon grass: Get some lemon grass from the supermarket, cut them in halves and put the root side down in the water and wait for a few days to see roots coming out , then you can easily put them in the ground or in pots , place them where you get morning sun and enjoy lemon grass greens in your morning tea.
- Mint: Grow them in pots from cuttings or a bunch you buy from the supermarket, take thicker stems for a better chance of survival. Remove all the leaves from the stem except the ones right on the top, there should be at least 4 nodes on the stem you choose. Cut the stem of the mint at a slant and immediately put them in water. After few days when lots of roots emerge , transfer them to soil.
Many other vegetables like brinjals, marrow , cucumbers can also be grown easily if you have space to do so but the above list is the easiest even if you have a small balcony, you can enjoy growing your own food and what a rewarding experience!
