Fruits
- Tomato - we can easily grow tomatoes in pots or in ground, with seeds right from our kitchen. Just cut a tomato in half , take out the seeds and sow them in some fresh potting soil and cover the seeds with a thin layer of more potting soil and water them & leave the pot in indirect sunlight. Alternatively you can grow them by ready seedlings from the garden center.
- Watermelon -This vine can also be grown by throwing some seeds from the fruit you eat. If you are short of space , you can wind the vine on a bamboo stick and tie and grow vertically.
- Cantaloupe - All melons grow the same way so if you can grow one type, others will become easier.
Vegetables
Brinjals - I got a seedling from a neighbor and planted it in the ground.
Okra- I saved some seeds from a dried okra and sowed them in the ground.
Sweet potatoes - They are grown from sweet potato slips. Slips are the stems and foliage that sprout from already grown sweet potatoes. I had some sweet potatoes which I forgot to cook for a few days and they started growing slips itself.
Herbs
Basil - Known as the King of herbs because of it’s amazing smell and benefits. Basil can be easily grown from seeds and they are fast growing specially if it receives the morning sun. There are many types of basil but the Thai basil & holy basil (Tulsi ) are the easiest to grow in this side of the world.
Fenugreek leaves- If you are looking for a herb that sprouts quickly and can be harvested in less than a week after sowing then fenugreek (Methi) is the one you should select.
Curry leaves - Having amazing health benefits , a curry plant is a must to have in your house. Only requires regular and intelligent pruning to keep the plant healthy and make it bushier so more and more leaves can be enjoyed.
Another plant or tree which is worth mentioning here is Moringa or the Drumstick tree , also known as a miracle tree for the multiple benefits it has and all parts being useful. You can cook both the leaves and the drumsticks.
Moringa can be grown from seeds or cuttings. Keep pruning to keep it manageable.
You can read my other blog where I have discussed the benefits of growing Moringa.
